Meet your Elementary School Counselor……

I began working as the Elementary School Counselor at Union School District in 2004. I previously worked at Butler School District as a School Counselor and for the Riverview IU6 as a Parent Partner. I also taught fourth grade at Clarion Elementary before becoming a school counselor.

I received a bachelor’s degree at Clarion University in Communications then a post baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education and a Masters of Education in Elementary School Counseling at Slippery Rock University.

I graduated from Clarion High School in 1988 and currently live in Lucinda with my husband Mike and 3 children, Corbin, Gabriel and Bryn. As a family we enjoy the outdoors with snow skiing, boating on the Clarion River and riding our bikes. I am also an avid runner.

My philosophy as a school counselor is to provide a Comprehensive and Developmental Elementary School Counseling Program. I work with all students in grades K-6 on a weekly basis either in small or large group guidance or individual sessions. I have created a program that strives to meet the needs of all students not just those in crisis. I have numerous programs and activities that students can participate in such as daily lunch groups, peer mentoring, Lunch Buddies that utilizes select high school students as mentors, Anti Drug/Alcohol lessons during Red Ribbon Week, Anti-Bullying activities and lessons, Character Education in weekly guidance lessons per classroom, XC Running Club, Career Day, and an annual Talent Show to name a few.

My goal as the Elementary School Counselor at Union School District is to help empower all students to make good choices, gain self worth and inner strength, and create a positive attitude to help build the foundation for success in their futures.
The Kindness Crusader mentoring program provides opportunities for select 6th grade students to promote, develop and maintain positive interactions and individual growth through role modeling among the entire student population and organized volunteer services.

Students are chosen based on, but not limited to, individual needs accessed by the school counselor, responsible performance in the classroom and social interactions among peers, and the promotion of leadership skills and abilities.

These students will work closely with the School Counselor. Students chosen to be a Kindness Crusader will have opportunities to conduct classroom guidance lessons with Mrs. Anderson, volunteer bi-monthly at Head Start, assist in developing a quarterly newsletter, meet with Mrs. Anderson during lunch on Day 6 and organize and run the school store.

Every 6th grade student has the opportunity to submit a short paragraph stating their interest in becoming a Kindness Crusader. Students will be chosen based on their essay, teacher recommendation, elementary school counselor’s individual observations and interactions, and overall behavior.

The Kindness Crusader Program is a developmental program. Students are not chosen based on academic levels or athletic abilities. Students are chosen based on their eagerness and willingness to help create and maintain a safe and friendly environment here at Rimersburg Elementary and within all the communities of Union School District.

I will select approximately 7 students for the first half of the school year and 7 different students for the last half of the school year.

The Lunch Buddy Program at Rimersburg Elementary School recognizes that children of all ages go through many phases of growth and change. Sometimes these changes can cause stress due to academic, social relationships and peer pressure demands.

The Lunch Buddy Program has been developed to pair your child with a Senior High student from Union High School as a mentor and friend. Each child will meet with their buddy once a week at Rimersburg Elementary for 40 minutes during their lunch period. Your child will have the opportunity to share information regarding social and academic stresses or just fun “kid stuff” at this time. The buddies are educated in appropriate topics and responses while engaging in this mentoring process.

Union Elementary School Classroom Guidance Program Overview

GOAL: The classroom guidance program is a preventative program to promote, practice and reinforce kindness skills in the school, home and community settings for grades K-6.

Our female children in the elementary schools are going through many phases of growth and change. During these years, girls normally experience many stresses due to academic demands, social relationships, relational aggression and peer pressure.

I currently run 3 groups of “Girl Power” for 4th, 5th and 6th grade. These groups meet twice a month during their regularly scheduled lunch period. The goal of these groups is to focus on self image, self-control, responsibility, conflict resolution, relational aggression, peer situations, social relationships and body image. I will lead the girls in discussions and complete simple activities that address the issues listed. All participation is voluntary. I strongly feel that allowing girls the opportunity such as this is important in their development and relationships.

As the school counselor, I often focus on preventative strategies that assist in empowering your child. Every year, I have many different groups at Sligo and Rimersburg Elementary Schools. These groups allow each child to safely express themselves in a small group setting with their peers focusing on age related issues.
