Union School District has recently become aware of a social media post alleging that a Union High School student made a threat to shoot other school students and that the District failed to communicate with the families involved.
We want to provide accurate information and reassure our community.
The District was not initially made aware of this situation. Once district officials learned of the alleged concern which occurred off school property, through indirect communication, we immediately initiated an investigation, contacted the families of the students involved, and notified appropriate law enforcement authorities.
In addition, precautionary safety measures were implemented, and the alleged preteen student involved was not permitted on school property during the investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
At this time, the situation has been addressed appropriately.
Union School District takes all threats seriously. Whenever a threat is reported to school personnel, our trained threat assessment team:
It is important for our community to understand that if the school has not initiated communication regarding a situation, it is likely because the concern has not been reported to us and we are unaware. We strongly encourage all students, parents, and community members to report any safety concerns immediately to school officials. Sharing information solely through social media is not an effective way to ensure student safety and may delay our ability to respond promptly.
The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in keeping our schools safe. If you have information related to school safety concerns, please contact your child’s school office or district administration immediately.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Kimmel
